Edda Lopez-Lennards never asked the government for a bailout like those moneymen at Bank of America.
Even after her husband died a few years ago, and she fell ill and ended up in a wheelchair and the bills began mounting, she was determined to keep her tidy two-family home on Devoe Terrace in the Bronx.
A former assistant in a law firm, her big mistake was falling for one of those subprime loans with an exploding interest rate - something a few million other Americans did.
Last summer, she escaped foreclosure by securing a temporary loan modification from her lender, Wilshire Credit Corp. Since then, she'd managed to make her $2,100 monthly payments on time.
Then Bank of America entered her life.
