Our Call for Fair Lending

Members of National People's Action and Illinois People's Action spoke at the Federal Joint Public Hearing on the Community Reinvestment Act Regulation this morning, right before heading over to Bank of America's downtown Chicago offices, to put talk to action.

The protest at Bank of America was, unfortunately, a familiar story: another family being unjustly foreclosed on, another loan workout delayed, and another crowd of Americans fed up with Bank of America's innane practices.

This time, NPA and Showdown in America fought for Emma Hurd in Chicago, a leader of Illinois People’s Action (IPA).

Emma and a hundred others from IPA and Chicago groups (including South Austin Coalition and Lakeview Action Coalition, Gender Just, and SOUL) paid a call on the Chicago headquarters of BofA, where a delegation of protesters met Mr. Tim Maloney, Market President for Chicago and Illinois of Bank of America.

By the end, NPA won an agreement from Bank of America to sit down and try to work through the bank’s mistakes in her foreclosure case, similar to how Americans fought for and helped save Edda Lopez's and Trenda Kennedy's home over the last couple months.

Video from the Bank of America action earlier in the day (some clips compliments of Progress Illinois):

But, the fight to hold big banks accountable doesn't stop here.

Individual workout plans are drops in the bucket of the housing crisis, and do little to clean up the destruction big banks have caused in our communities. Today's hearing with bank regulators and subsequent protest are just the first seconds of Round II for the Showdown in America campaign.  Stay tuned.
