You Can't Evict an Idea

Occupy Wall Street General Assembly Meeting after EvictionAt 1:30 a.m. this morning, Mayor Michael Bloomberg and the New York City Police Department raided Zucotti Park, forcing out the hundreds protesters who have occupied the park for nearly two months, fighting for a government and an economy that works for the 99 percent.

As an Occupy Wall Street blogger wrote this morning in the wake of the raid: "This moment is nothing short of America rediscovering the strength we hold when we come together as citizens to take action to address crises that impact us all."

In the face of these challenges, we need to remind Wall Street and the politicians they control, and the entire 1% that there are tens of millions of us and that we will not be silenced or evicted.

"Actions speak louder than words, and Bloomberg's actions contradict his rhetoric about protecting free speech in New York," said Jaron Benjamin, a community organizer with VOCAL-NY who responded to an early morning alert from Occupy Wall Street to physically defend the park. "It was a cowardly act, plain and simple, and it was done to protect his buddies on Wall Street from being held accountable for their crimes."

Here are some ways that you can take action, even if you can't make it to Zucotti Park:
  1. Attend one of the hundreds of "We Are the 99%" events across the country on November 17th.
  2. Organize in your community to get your friends, family, and local government to divest from big banks.
We echo Occupy Wall Street in saying, “You can't evict an idea whose time has come.”
